Bon Secour, whose French name translates roughly to “good help,” was settled by French fishermen in the 1700s and has centered on the seafood industry ever since. The 2020 Census counted 1,754 residents in a community that sits at an elevation of about 10 feet along Bon Secour Bay, itself a contiguous extension of the eastern edge of Mobile Bay, with the Bon Secour River emptying into it here. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill hit the local shrimp fishery hard, and the working-waterfront character of the town is a real contrast to the vacation-rental economy that defines Orange Beach and Gulf Shores just a few miles east.

Bon Secour’s cart market skews toward everyday driveway and waterfront use, carts that get someone down to a dock, around a larger rural lot, or over to a neighbor’s, rather than a fleet of rental units cycling through weekly guests. It is a smaller, quieter version of what you would find in Lillian or the rural stretches near Elberta.

Golf carts and the Martyn Woods subdivision

Bon Secour itself is unincorporated and has no city government to pass its own golf cart ordinance. There is a wrinkle worth knowing about, though: Gulf Shores’ own golf cart ordinance designates certain streets, Lyman Boulevard, Millhouse Road, Treasure Oaks Road and Court, Beatrice Road, and Millwood Drive, inside a subdivision called Martyn Woods at Bon Secour as legal for cart use. That subdivision carries the Bon Secour name and sits within Gulf Shores’ municipal authority, so its designated streets are governed by Gulf Shores’ city ordinance, not by any Bon Secour-specific rule, and the designation does not extend to the wider unincorporated Bon Secour community outside that subdivision. Outside Martyn Woods, we found no designated public street for cart use in the Bon Secour area; most cart use here is on private property. What actually wears on a Bon Secour cart

Bon Secour Bay is calmer than the open Gulf but still salt water, and a cart parked near the shoreline here corrodes on a similar timeline to a Lillian cart on Perdido Bay, slower than a true Gulf-front cart but faster than one kept well inland. Heat is still the dominant factor for battery life across this whole service area, and a working waterfront community means carts here also see their share of sand, mud, and gear hauled around, which shows up in brakes and tires the same way beach sand does further east.
