A resort town that grew fast

Gulf Shores counted 15,014 residents at the 2020 Census, a 54.1 percent jump from 2010, on 33.21 square miles of Baldwin County coast. State Route 59, called Gulf Shores Parkway through town, runs north to Foley; State Route 182 is Beach Boulevard along the shorefront; and State Route 180, Fort Morgan Road, runs inland and west toward the Fort Morgan peninsula. Tourism carries the local economy, with the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, Waterville USA, the annual Hangout Music Festival, and roughly ten golf courses drawing visitors on top of the beach itself. The city has weathered its share of hurricanes to get here: Hurricane Frederic in 1979 leveled much of the original town, Hurricane Ivan came ashore directly at Gulf Shores in 2004 as a Category 3 storm, and Hurricane Sally made landfall near the city in 2020.

Where golf carts are actually legal here

Gulf Shores took a narrower approach to golf carts than its neighbor to the east. Under Section 21-13 of the city code, enacted pursuant to the state constitutional amendment covering Baldwin County, carts may only be operated on public streets the city has specifically designated, and the designated list is not a citywide grid the way Orange Beach’s is. Instead it names streets inside particular subdivisions: Gulf Wood Highlands (Hilltop Drive, Sunset Drive, Magnolia Drive, and the numbered avenues off West 1st Street), Cypress Park and the surrounding area (West Canal Drive, Clubhouse Drive, the Fairway drives, Mossy Oak Drive, and more), Craft Farms, the city’s golf course community (Augusta Drive, Pinehurst Drive, Pinehurst Circle, St. Andrews Drive, Turnberry Drive, and the rest of its golf-themed street grid), Martyn Woods at Bon Secour (Lyman Boulevard, Millhouse Road, Treasure Oaks Road), Aventura (Stafford Boulevard, Aldrin Avenue, Gemini Street), and the streets in and around West Lagoon Avenue. Outside those named streets, a cart cannot legally operate on a Gulf Shores public street, road, or highway.

What actually breaks on a Gulf Shores cart

Gulf State Park, at 6,150 acres with Lake Shelby, a 1,540-foot Gulf pier, and a large modern campground, sits inside the city and draws its own steady stream of carts from RV and cabin guests getting around the park’s grounds, though carts there operate on park property under the park’s own rules rather than the city’s street ordinance.

Storm season here

Gulf Shores has taken direct hits before: Hurricane Frederic in 1979, Hurricane Ivan making landfall here in 2004 with sustained winds of 120 mph and a wind gust of 145 mph recorded on a sailboat in nearby Wolf Bay, and Hurricane Sally coming ashore near the city in 2020.
