Golf Cart Lights and Street-Legal Equipment in Orange Beach

Orange Beach Golf Cart Repair installs and repairs golf cart lighting and the equipment both Orange Beach and Gulf Shores require for street operation: lighting circuit repairs $75 to $150, brake light or turn signal repair $100 to $250, a full light kit install $250 to $400 plus the kit, and mirrors and reflectors usually under $100 installed.

What the law actually requires

Alabama does not run golf carts under one statewide equipment law. On this coast the baseline comes from Ala. Const. Baldwin County §15.70, a constitutional amendment specific to Baldwin County, which sets the minimum equipment for any cart a municipality here permits for street use: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and a windshield. Each city then builds its own ordinance on top of that floor, and Orange Beach and Gulf Shores did it differently.

Orange Beach, under Chapter 70, Article VIII of its city code, inspects every permitted cart for headlights mounted no higher than 36 inches and illuminated at all times the cart is in operation, brake lights, turn signals, a windshield, a rearview mirror, working brakes, and reliable steering. No permit is issued until the cart passes.

Gulf Shores requires the same core list, headlights, brake lights, turn signals, a windshield, and a rearview mirror, and adds two things Orange Beach does not: seat belts for every occupant and an orange warning flag displayed at least six feet above the ground. Both cities also require red reflectorized warning devices front and rear.

What we install and repair

• Headlights. Mounted at the correct height for whichever city’s rules apply, wired to stay illuminated whenever the cart is running.
• Brake lights and turn signals. Both cities require them, and a burned-out bulb or a bad flasher relay is one of the most common reasons a cart fails a permit renewal inspection.
• Windshields. Required baseline equipment under the county amendment itself; we install and repair mounting hardware and cracked panels.
• Mirrors and reflectors. Required front and rear under both cities’ ordinances.
• Horns. Not required by either ordinance we could find, but commonly requested alongside a light kit.
• Orange safety flags. Required in Gulf Shores, not in Orange Beach. We mount them at the required height when the cart will operate in Gulf Shores.
• Seat belts. Required in Gulf Shores for every occupant.

Salt air and lighting circuits

Exposed wiring connectors and lamp housings corrode in salt air the same way battery terminals do, and a cart that has lived outside near the Gulf or a bay for a season or two often shows it first in flickering or dead lights before anything more serious. A lighting circuit inspection with dielectric grease on the connectors is a cheap way to head that off, and it is part of every tune-up we do.

What we cannot do

We install and repair equipment. We cannot title a golf cart, register it, or turn it into a low-speed vehicle. An LSV is a separate, factory-built category of vehicle under Alabama law, titled and given a VIN at manufacture, and no amount of aftermarket equipment converts a standard golf cart into one after the fact. If you want a 25 mph street-legal vehicle with full DOT-style equipment, that has to be purchased as one. What we can do is make sure your existing golf cart meets whichever city’s ordinance applies to where you actually drive it, and get you through the permit inspection.
